Azeri religious leader blames politics for Iraq war

25 February 2006 [20:17] - TODAY.AZ
Allakhshukur Pashazade, head of Caucasian Muslim Religious Department, strongly condemned the bombing of mosques and recent violence in Iraq.

He said at a press conference on Friday that those who committed such crimes are not Islamic. He also urged preventing a civil war between Sunnis and Shiites in Iraq, Turan news agency informs.

"There are no Sunni or Shiite mosques; all are the home of Allah and nobody has the right to destroy or damage them," said Pashazade. He added that a conflict between Sunnis and Shiites would be "more dangerous than an atomic weapon."

He said that politicians "who do not believe in God" are to blame for all that happened. He also said that in the near future the leaders of Islamic countries will gather to discuss the situation in Iraq.
