Georgian president hopes negotiations on Russia's accession to WTO are brought to "logical conclusion"

03 November 2011 [10:50] - TODAY.AZ
Georgia has been holding talks with Russia on terms of latter's accession to the WTO taking into account its national interests and in compliance with all principles of international law, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said Wednesday at the presidential palace where he met with the Georgian working group that will hold last round of the negotiations with the Russian delegation in Switzerland on November 9-10.

Saakashvili said that since 1992, Georgia is trying to monitor and control those goods that enter Georgia and that are moving within the country, taking into account the whole territory of Georgia, including Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

"We have always had a desire to control the process on our own or with the assistance of the international monitoring, and it is this issue that is regulated by the WTO. We initially proposed this to Russia, but after the open aggression it become out of the question, but the negotiations on WTO and the efforts of all sides have made it possible," he said.

The President of Georgia expressed his hope that in the coming days, this issue will be brought "to its logical end."

"Time is limited since in a few days the final decision should be made. Georgia, Switzerland and the EU have developed a compromise agreement, and now it is up to Russia. They will have to decide on an existing document," Saakashvili said.

The secretary of Georgia's National Security Council, Giorgi Bokeria have also attended the meeting with working group members.

Russia is to give a final response to the Swiss developed final version of the agreement at the meeting on November 9-10. If the response would be positive, a decision on Russia's membership to the WTO would be made at the ministerial conference of 153 WTO member countries on December 15.
