Turks oppose radar deployment in country

Residents of the Kurecik area in the Turkish city of Malatya held a rally against the deployment of a NATO's early-warning radar system in the area, CNN Turk reported.

Locals claim that the radar deployment in the in the Kurecik base of Turkey may adversely affect public health. They say that earlier American radars were deployed here and their electromagnetic radiation contributed to the spread of various diseases in the area.

U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Francis Ricciardone and Adviser to the Turkish Foreign Minister Firuddin Sinirlioglu signed an agreement on Sept.14 to deploy the European missile defense system (MDS) in the Kurecik base in the Turkish city of Malatya.

An early-warning radar system will be deployed in Turkey, Turkish Foreign Ministry's official representative Selcuk Unal said earlier.

He said the decision on deploying anti-missile defense system was adopted at the NATO summit in Lisbon in 2010. Turkey initially supported the initiative.
