Turkish Museum of Shame sheds light on darkest atrocities

06 September 2011 [10:30] - TODAY.AZ
A museum about Turkey’s tragic experiences during the Sept. 12, 1980, military coup has been opened at the Contemporary Art Center in Ankara’s Çankaya district.

The “Sept. 12 Museum of Shame” was put together by the left-wing Ankara ’78 Association with the support of the Çankaya Municipality to remember the coup’s victims. “We will sing the song of those who stood against the darkness of Sept. 12,” said association President Hüseyin Esentürk.

Çankaya Mayor Bülent Tanık said both leftists and rightists condemn the constitution written in the coup’s wake. The museum presents the life stories, told through letters and photographs, of people who were jailed or lost their lives in the 1980 events.
