Armed incident occurs between border guards and drug smugglers at Iranian-Pakistani border

An armed incident occurred between border guards and drug smugglers at the customs checkpoint at the Iranian-Pakistani border yesterday, deputy commander of the Iranian Border Police, Ahmad Geravand, was quoted by the Iranian news agency FARS as saying.

During the incident the smugglers ran away, leaving the drugs weighing 5 tons 180 kilograms.

"Roughly 1 ton 797 kilograms of opium, 1.003 kilograms of hashish, 100 kilograms of morphine, 20 kilograms of heroin," Geravand said.

Iran is a transit corridor between Europe and Afghanistan, which is a major opium producer.

According to the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime, the border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan is the world's largest free trade area for illegal trade in weapons and drugs.
