Turkey's energy requirement expected to increase by 160 pc by 2020

19 April 2011 [10:18] - TODAY.AZ
Efforts are under way in Turkey to raise consciousness about heat insulation in buildings as the country's energy requirement is expected to increase by 160 percent by 2020.

Kubilay Ulu, president of the executive board of Heat Insulation Industrialists' Association, told the A.A on Monday that, "recent researches have revealed that the world's energy
demand will rise by 65 percent by 2020. Turkey is a developing country and its energy requirement is expected to rise by 160 percent by 2020."

"The world has already begun seeking for alternative energy resources. But we need to start using current energy resources in a more productive way first," he said.

Ulu said that Turkey's imports of energy reached $34 billion in 2010 while its current deficit was $48.6 billion. "It means that our imports of energy is higher than half of our current deficit. The reason for that is some 90 percent of buildings in Turkey are lack of heat insulation and we waste each year energy of $7.5 billion," he said.

"Under recently prepared Energy Productivity Strategy Document, people will have to pay more tax for buildings without heat insulation as of 2012. Also, heat insulation became a necessity for construction of new buildings. All these arrangements will help us to save a great deal of money," he added.
