Iran's nuclear plant safe: ECO chief

14 April 2011 [11:53] - TODAY.AZ
Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant is one of the "safest" nuclear facilities in the world, Muhammad Yahya Maroofi, Secretary General of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) said, Press TV reported with reference to IRIB.

"The required standards are being met in Bushehr nuclear plant," Maroofi told during a tour of Iran's first nuclear power station in the south of the country on Wednesday.

"The experts of the plant responded to our questions in this regard," he said, adding that ECO members are entitled to peaceful nuclear energy.

Iran's first nuclear power plant in Bushehr operates under the full supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Fereydoun Abbasi said on Saturday that the Islamic Republic has proved its commitment to observing safety guidelines at its nuclear facilities.

The AEOI says the Bushehr nuclear power plant is quakeproof and that the safety systems used at the site meet the latest international standards.

It says the plant will never experience a situation like the one that crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, where the safety systems used went back to the 1960s and the 1970s.
