Georgian president urges security officials to be vigilant to terrorist threat

01 April 2011 [12:00] - TODAY.AZ
Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili called a National Security Council session to address the terrorist attacks on Tbilisi and Kutaisi on March 31, the Presidential website reported.

Saakashvili said it is necessary to strengthen security measures in order to not repeat such incidents and to continue the country's development.

The Georgian Interior Ministry detained three persons on Thursday who intended to organize two simultaneous blasts - at the City Hall and the House of Justice in Kutaisi. They were detained in the process of planting the explosives.

"It is absolutely clear that all of this has a connection. We are fully informed about what is happening. This is why we have to continue working. The level of security and especially the calmness that was obtained by Georgia in respect to our neighbors, especially our northern neighbor, is maintained despite the obvious attempts of external forces to shake all of this even a bit. However we need to make our actions ten times stronger," he said.

"I want to express my gratitude to those people, who helped us in avoiding what was planned in Kutaisi today. We have to know that it is not the first, nor would it be the last time for us. We must strengthen our security measures; we must work more and make Georgia more secure," he added.

Saakashvili said this planned attack came from the Tskhinvali region in previous years. Now the attacks have been relegated to the occupied territories of Abkhazia.

"I once again repeat that we need to strengthen our work in this region in order to be completely insured," Saakashvili stated.
