Miners start strike in Georgia

20 April 2010 [12:19] - TODAY.AZ
The Georgian Trade Unions begin the miners' warning strike in Zestafoni and Chiatura (Western Georgia) from 20 April demanding protection of the rights of employed.

The Georgian Trade Unions reported that labor unions and the miners have decided to take joint action because of the increasing number of accidents and industrial injuries in recent times. But the meetings in Zestaponi and Chiatura, which were aimed to discuss solutions to problems, passed under surveillance and pressure.

"The meetings have been planned in two phases, including in Zestafoni April 10 and in Chiatura - April 12. In both cases, the miners were followed and in Chiatura they even faced physical abuse," the union reported.

Despite the incidents, the assembly created the strike committee and approved the letter with the requirements related to wage increases by 50 percent, definition of paid leave of 35 days, registration indefinite employment contracts and improvement of working conditions and so on.
