'Iran to build new nuclear plants next year'

18 March 2010 [13:23] - TODAY.AZ
Iran's First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Rahimi says the country will build new nuclear plants during the next Iranian year which begins on Sunday.
“During the new year, new nuclear plants will be built and the Islamic Republic of Iran will continue with its path without allowing the arrogant powers to meddle," Rahimi said on Wednesday.

He noted that Iran has always reiterated that it is not seeking nuclear weapons and it only wants to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

“We needed help to have uranium enriched at 20 percent level. At first, we declared our readiness to buy it but they refused [to sell it]. After that, President [Mahmoud Ahmadinejad] ordered the production of nuclear fuel," he added.

Tehran's research reactor uses 20-percent enriched uranium to produce medical radioisotopes for cancer patients.

Iran's first nuclear power plant in the southern city of Bushehr is expected to come on stream by June this year, according to the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI).
