Fakes and mathematics - where do Armenian myths come from?

06 July 2026 [12:12] - TODAY.AZ

In recent weeks, due to well-known events, the topic of the mythical "Armenian genocide" has become an unplanned topic of discussion, to the great joy of the Armenians. It is very rare when Armenians manage to get people to talk about a century-old myth outside of April 24. As a rule, after the next anniversary of events that did not take place in history, the world forgets about it and remembers it only a year later. More precisely, the diaspora and the lobby are strongly reminding the world about this.

This time, the Armenian fiction appeared in the discourse outside the traditional date, which greatly pleased spyurk, who has been feeding on this myth for more than a decade. "Witnesses" came out from everywhere (?!), and interviews with various representatives of the Armenian community were published in the European media. Unfortunately, European journalists are never in doubt about what their Armenian interlocutors are saying. As a result, fakes are thrown out into the world, which gradually take root, turn into arguments, and are shamelessly mistaken for "reliable sources" by all sorts of Wikipedia. And then it's a matter of technique.

More than one Armenian myth has found its way to the masses in this way. Thanks to this service rendered to the Armenians by European and Russian admirers, almost everything related to the history of the Armenians is a collection of fictions and political manipulations.

Italian journalist Francesco Battistini published in the newspaper Corriere della Sera, dedicated to the inadmissibility of using the events of 1915 for selfish purposes. One cannot disagree with the fact that historical facts cannot be used for political purposes. But that's not what attracts attention. The article uses as an illustration the statements of a certain Aram from Jerusalem, who, in addition to the traditional whining, expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that no Israeli government had ever talked about the "three million" victims of the alleged "genocide."

Do not think that the mention of "three million" will pass without a trace. It will remain in the Italian edition and will be perceived as something reflecting reality. Fantasies about "one and a half million victims" also appeared on the table thanks to such careful stuffing. For a very long time, the number of alleged victims was estimated at 500,000. But this figure did not look very impressive against the background of the scale of the myth being created, so they gradually began to introduce "1.5 million". Gradually, through the media, in speeches at scientific gatherings. The lie has taken root and has already firmly replaced the previous figures. Nobody remembers about 500 thousand now.

Where did the "1.5 million" come from? Simple arithmetic. According to statistics, about 2 million Armenians lived in the Ottoman Empire. In 1922, there were 400,000 of them. By simple subtraction, we got 1.5 million. And that's it! You can find out about this from open sources on the Web. The missing number of Armenians were declared "victims of genocide." Hundreds of thousands of Armenians who had fled the world were declared dead. Purely in Armenian. Although not only that. To be fair, it is worth mentioning the role of politicians and scientists of the countries to whom the Armenians rendered great service in the fight against the Ottoman Empire. In general, all Armenian myths are not so much the fault of the Armenians themselves as of their guardians. It is now claimed that the indicator was derived on the basis of "many years of research" allegedly conducted in archives around the world.

But this is not the end either. Some time ago, the figure of "2 million" began to appear in the media. Quietly, slowly, gradually. Soon, it will also be justified by "many years of research." No one is worried that the number of "victims" may be more than the total number of Armenians living in Turkey. Because you can always add the necessary numbers and declare them the result of sleepless nights in some archives.

According to the official census of 1914, there were about 1,221,850 Armenians in the Ottoman Empire. The Patriarchate of Constantinople disagreed with this, considering that there were 2,100,000 Armenians.  And "modern researchers" agree on the figure of about 2,500,000 Armenians. Where this figure came from a hundred years later is anyone's guess.

The myth-makers are not bothered by the fact that only those Armenians who lived in Eastern Anatolia and the surrounding area were resettled during the First World War. Armenians in Istanbul, Egypt, and other provinces of the empire continued to live peacefully, prosper, and occupy high political and financial positions during and after the so-called "genocide."

By the way, the same methods are used to calculate the number of Armenians who lived in the Azerbaijani SSR before the Karabakh conflict. Figures of "500 thousand" and even "1.2 million" are taken from balda, and they are voiced everywhere. Although, according to official data, on the eve of the conflict, there were less than 400,000 Armenians in the republic, along with those who lived in Karabakh.

According to the 1989 census, 390,505 Armenians, including Karabakh Armenians, lived in Azerbaijan. According to unofficial data, by the beginning of the conflict there were about 100,000 Armenians in Baku, and by 1990 there were already about 20,000 Armenians. Most of the Armenians were informed about the expected events by their organizers and left in advance.

The same manipulations are being carried out with the number of Armenians who voluntarily left Karabakh. At first it was "100 thousand", then "120 thousand", and now they are talking about "150 thousand", despite the fact that there was no such number even in Soviet times.

In short, arithmetic has always been bad for the Armenians and the circles that care for them.

In this regard, I recall an anecdote of "Armenian radio".

"There were four cats in the room. Three came out. How much is left?"

 "Alone"

 "No, two."

 "Why?!"

 "One returned."..
