Scientists from the University of Liverpool and the University of Lorand Eötvös have discovered that dogs age earlier than commonly believed. According to their findings, dogs reach old age at around 7 years of life, and senior status at approximately 12.5 years. The results of the study were published in the Journal of Small Animal Practice (JSAP).

After examining a large database of electronic medical records from veterinary clinics, the researchers found that the vast majority of dogs classified as elderly were over 7.25 years old. The average age of the 832 dogs categorized as "senile" was 12.5 years.

Small breeds, such as Jack Russell Terriers, aged later, with the average age of elderly dogs in this breed being 14.1 years. In contrast, larger dogs, like Labrador Retrievers, reached old age earlier—typically between 10.5 to 13.6 years, with an average of around 12 years. In mixed-breed dogs, the aging threshold was 13.2 years, in Border Collies it was 12.7 years, and in Cocker Spaniels, it was 11.7 years.

The study also identified the five most common health issues in older dogs. The researchers found that 35% of these dogs were either overweight or underweight. Additionally, 33% of dogs experienced musculoskeletal difficulties, such as stiffness and limited mobility.

Dental diseases, including tartar and periodontitis, were observed in 31% of the dogs, with Cocker Spaniels being 2.7 times more likely to experience dental issues than mixed-breed dogs. The fourth and fifth most common health problems were skin diseases (28%) and digestive issues, such as vomiting and diarrhea (22%).

The study authors emphasized that the data can help dog owners better prepare for their pets' aging process. They also highlighted the importance of regular veterinary check-ups and preventive care to ensure older dogs remain as healthy as possible.

Aging in Dogs: What Every Pet Owner Should Know

This research offers crucial insights into the aging process of dogs, underscoring the significance of early detection and care. As dogs age, their health needs evolve, and owners should remain vigilant for changes in behavior or physical condition. The findings suggest that maintaining an active lifestyle, managing weight, and addressing dental and musculoskeletal health can significantly improve the quality of life for senior dogs. Regular veterinary visits, along with appropriate preventive treatments, can help ensure that your pet enjoys their golden years with comfort and vitality.
