Kazakhstan, China discuss nuclear cooperation

Chief Executive Officer of Kazakh National Atomic Company Kazatomprom Askar Zhumagaliev discussed cooperation with Chinese atomic companies during his visit to China, Kazakh company reported Nov. 29.

In particular Kazatomprom’s CEO held negotiations with Director General of China General Nuclear Power Group (CGNPC) Zhang Shanming and President of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) Qian Zhimin. The parties discussed a wide range of issues related to nuclear power development and underlined a good progress in cooperation between the companies and successful efforts on joint uranium mining projects.

They also shared their opinions on the supplies of Kazakhstan’s high value added uranium products to China and uranium transit through China.

Kazatomprom is the national operator of Kazakhstan for export of uranium and its compounds, rare metals, nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants, special purpose equipment, technologies and double-use materials.

Kazakhstan is the biggest uranium producer in the world. In 2015 the country produced 23,800 tons of uranium. Meanwhile there is no nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan and it sends all the produced uranium for export.
