Iran’s Rouhani against destruction of Sunni mosque in capital

18 August 2015 [16:32] - TODAY.AZ

An aide to Iranian president says Hassan Rouhani is disappointed with the destruction of a praying venue belonging to Sunni Muslims in the Iranian capital.

“All the Iranian high ranking officials, including President Hasan Rouhani have been disappointed with the destruction of Sunni Muslims’ praying venue in Tehran’s Punak District,” the IRNA quoted Ali Younesi, adviser to the Iranian president on ethnic and religious minorities affairs August 18.

While meeting a group of elite from Iran’s mostly Sunni populated and southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan province, Younesi expressed hope the issue would be resolved by the law enforcement agencies, the report added.

According to the report, the praying venue was dismantled on July 29 by a group of forces belonging to the Tehran Municipality, law enforcement and security forces. Iran’s Ministry of Internal Affairs later rejected any involvement of the special police forces in the action.

Reportedly the country’s Sunni Muslims have no mosque in the Iranian capital and a group of Sunni preachers asked the government to allow them to establish a mosque.
