'2012 will be a year of renovation in Georgia'

The Georgian Presidential Administration has summed up its progress during 2011. As the president's spokesperson Manana Manjgaladze said at a briefing, many important developments took place at an international level in 2011.

She said they included the announcement of opening talks with the EU on free trade and visa facilitation, high-level visits to Georgia, including French President Nicolas Sarkozy and NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen's visits.

"The NATO Secretary General's visit and estimates he made during a conversation about a new Georgia, where progress against corruption has been made in the development of democracy and the fight against it, are very important. Also the NATO-Georgia Commission's meeting and a statement that Georgia is even closer to the Alliance compared to previous years was very important, "Ms Manjgaladze said.

She said a resolution adopted by the European Parliament which creates a strong foundation for further approximation of Georgia and the EU and the prospect for the country's accession to the European Union should be highlighted.
She stressed Georgia's participation in peacekeeping missions in Afghanistan and said that cooperation will further continue in this regard.

With regard to domestic politics according to Ms Manjgaladze, reforms carried out in the education system, the decision to increase pensions, economic growth up to 6.5 per cent in the country, tourism development and construction of new hospitals are very important. "2012 will be a year of renovation and creation of new jobs," She concluded.
