Veteran US analyst: Azerbaijan can try to bring the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh on to the agenda of the UN Security Council

“Azerbaijan can try to bring the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh on to the agenda of the UN Security Council, but it remains to be seen when the proper time to do so would be”, a veteran US analyst on Middle East and Eurasia Security issues Michael Gunter, professor of Political Science at the Tennessee Technological University, said.

He congratulate on the election of Azerbaijan as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

“This is an important position as the Security Council is the highest organ of the UN dealing with matters of international peace and security”.

A veteran US analyst believes, as a member of this UN organ, by definition, Azerbaijan will be contributing to the highest councils of debate on issues of peace and war.

“Such a position calls for careful and intelligent diplomacy and will allow Azerbaijan’s principled position on the matter of Nagorno-Karabakh and any other issues dealing with Islamic issues to receive more serious attention in international politics”, he added.

Prof. Gunter also underscored that, the Western powers as well as Russia and China would greatly appreciate working with a moderate Islamic state such as Azerbaijan “to further world stability and peace as well at the same time seeking fairly to alleviate some of the burning issues of poverty and injustice that so often inflame world affairs”.
