
Azerbaijan`s capital yesterday hosted the 6th Thematic Workshop for specialized staff of European National Preventive Mechanisms Against Torture (NPMs). The workshop provided the opportunity to NPMs to exchange views and compare experiences on issues of concern to their daily work with colleagues from all over Europe as well as with experts from the UN Sub-Committee against Torture (SPT), the European Commission for the prevention of Torture (CPT) and the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) and also individual experts.
The theme of this workshop was “The protection of persons belonging to particularly vulnerable groups in places of deprivation of liberty”. The Workshop was attended by Markus Jaeger, Head of National Human Rights Structures Unit, Prisons and Police Division, Council of Europe, Aisha Muhammed, vice president of the UN Sub-Committee against Torture and Anton van Kalmthout, member of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture.
Azerbaijan`s Commissioner for Human Rights, Elmira Suleymanova, highlighted what had been done by the Azeri authorities under the UN Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
