Deputy chairman of Azerbaijani ruling party meets PACE co-rapporteur

Deputy chairman and executive secretary of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) Ali Ahmedov on Tuesday received the co-rapporteur of the PACE Monitoring Committee on Azerbaijan, one of the members of the faction of European People's Party in the PACE Pedro Agramunt, a member of the PACE Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights K.Bahen and chairman of the PACE Regulatory Committee Egidijus Vareikis, the NAP official website reported.

The Azerbaijani society expects from international organizations serious steps for the fair settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Ahmedov said at the meeting. As a result of aggression, Armenia has occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijani territories, one million people became refugees and internally displaced people, said Ahmedov.

"Unfortunately, significant results have not yet been achieved on the settlement of the conflict, the Azerbaijani government is taking the necessary steps to improve the living conditions of internally displaced persons. But the international community should in general unify its efforts to resolve this conflict," said Ahmedov.

Azerbaijan is an important country for Europe and plays an important role in energy security of Europe, said Ahmedov. He stated that the NAP cooperates with the European People's Party and has appealed with a proposal to become a member of this organization. "We hope that this issue will soon be considered," he said.

Agramunt said that the goal of his visit to Azerbaijan is to attend the "round table" dedicated to inter-religious dialogue. "Although we are the representatives of other religions, we share the values. We also have supporters in the European People's Party. We hope that the mutual dialogue will be helpful for all societies," said Agramunt.
