The Azerbaijani President pardoned eight people on his own initiative without any discussion in the Commission, the head of department on work with law-enforcement agencies of the Azerbaijani Presidential Administration Fuad Alasgarov said.

He was commenting on the pardon decree signed by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in connection with the 93rd anniversary of the establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.

Continuing national leader Heydar Aliyev's tradition of humanism, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev signed another act of pardon, Alasgarov said.

"In general, the act of pardon concerns 90 people," he said. "About 70 of them are freed from the unserved term of the imprisonment sentence, 10 - from the penalty of imprisonment, 2 - from correctional work, 6 people - from a fine. Two prisoners' term of the sentence of imprisonment was reduced by half. There are 8 foreigners among the pardoned."

He said the Pardon Commission considered 300 appeals. Taking into account the nature of the committed crimes, the degree of their public danger, health and marital status, improvement in the period of serving a sentence, only 82 people were recommended for pardon.

"I want to stress that 8 people have been pardoned on the personal initiative of Mr. President, without debates in the Commission," Alasgarov said. "They were the former first deputy head of the executive power of Baku Eldaniz Lahijev, who was accused of embezzlement of compensation that should have been paid in connection with the wrecking of buildings around the U.S. embassy. These people also included the prisoners convicted for corruption in connection with the criminal cases of Ali Insanov, Fakhraddin Abbasov, Parviz Kazimov, Akif Maharramov, Anar Namazov, and Eldar Rzayev. The president also pardoned the former head of Nizami district police station 23 Mushvig Madatov, has committed several crimes abusing his official position, the former founder and editor-in-chief of "Real Azerbaijan" and "Daily Azerbaijan" Eynulla Fatullayev."
