Political scientist: Next meeting of presidents can become turning point in Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement

The next meeting of the presidents can become a turning point in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement, director of the Center for Political Innovation and Technology Mubariz Ahmedoglu said to a press conference.

"The space for the imitation of the Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has narrowed. Therefore, the next meeting of the presidents is hopeful. Meeting in Kazan will be a critical step in resolving the conflict. After the meeting, either the active separatism will flourish in the territory of Russia, or the problems associated with separatism in the CIS will be fully resolved," he said.

A trilateral meeting of the Presidents Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, Dmitry Medvedev of Russia and Serzh Sargsyan of Armenia will be held in June. Ahmedoglu touched upon the recent statement by Sargsyan regarding the role of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the collapse of the Soviet Union.

"Recently, the Armenian president stated that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was the main cause of the collapse of the Soviet Union. We for a long time have been trying to present to the attention of the world community that the Armenians are contentious, they were not committed to any state, where they live, and always tried to destroy it from inside. At this time, the Armenian President himself confirmed this," he said.

Political scientist expressed his opinion about the statement by the Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization Nikolai Bordyuzha.

"Bordyuzha said that Azerbaijan wants to exacerbate the situation in the region. By this he wants to say that in the case of a possible war, the CSTO will defend Armenia. But Bordyuzha's statement has no effect, because many of the CSTO member states are in good relations with Azerbaijan and would never oppose it. Either this statement will be denied during a year, or stringent measures will be taken in respect of Bordyuzha. Because the Azerbaijani government will not remain indifferent to this statement," said Ahmedoglu.
