Top official: Azerbaijan- Romania agreements create solid legal base

19 April 2011 [18:30] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan-Romania  friendly relations have a rich history, Azerbaijani Parliamentary Speaker Ogtay Asadov said at a meeting with Romanian President Traian Basescu.

After the restoration of Azerbaijan's independence, these relations begun to develop along new lines, he said.

"Azerbaijan-Romania relations reached the level of a strategic partnership thanks to the two countries’ leaders. To date, the two countries have signed 52 documents. These documents have created a solid legal basis for the further expansion of our cooperation," Asadov said.

Asadov congratulated Basescu on receiving the Heydar Aliyev Order for his services to improve cooperation between the two countries and wished him the utmost success in his future activity.

Asadov then spoke about the prospects of developing Azerbaijan-Romania economic relations, resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Azerbaijan's role in European energy security, and Azerbaijan’s participation in major regional projects.

Basescu said Azerbaijan is a strategic partner and close friend to Romania.

"We see Azerbaijan not only as an oil and gas exporting country. Azerbaijan is also a state that plays an important role in ensuring security in the region" he said.

Basescu added that Romania's position remains unchanged on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

"We regard that the conflict must be settled on the basis of Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity."

Basescu has already completed his two-day visit to Azerbaijan.
