The Azerbaijani opposition Umid party refused to participate in the Public Assembly.

The Party’s Executive Office the decision at a meeting, spokesman Shebnem Karsli said. She said the assembly restricted the membership of party leader Igbal Agazade, as he is MP.

"The inter-party debates came to conclusion that the Public Assembly has no potential to influence the processes occurring in the country. Therefore, we formed the view that membership in the assembly is hopeless for the party," Karsli said.

A number of Azerbaijani political parties, NGOs and the candidates, who were dissatisfied with the results of the parliamentary elections in 2010, established the Public Assembly.

However, the party’s two members are members of the Public Assembly, she said.

"These individuals were members of the Public Assembly before joining Umid. That is, they were accepted into the party a month ago,” she added.

Umid was established in 1993. The Civil Solidarity Party (CSP) united with the party in 2002. CSP Chairman Igbal Agazade was then elected the chairman of the Umid party.
