US embassy in Azerbaijan: Stuart Levey’s words about Azerbaijan and Turkey were misrepresented

02 November 2010 [15:15] - TODAY.AZ
US embassy in Azerbaijan said the US Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence within the United States Department of the Treasury Stuart Levey’s words in his interview to Voice of America were misrepresented.

The embassy told APA that indeed Levey made following statement: “My trip to Turkey and Azerbaijan is of course, as you mention, these are two neighbors of Iran. For that reason they have particular sensitivities, but those sensitivities go in both directions. On the one hand, they want to make sure that they are able to maintain cross-border transportation, and there’s some trade that they’re concerned about. But on the other hand, Iran’s neighbors are most at risk here in terms of how this whole issue plays out. They very much want to see a peaceful, diplomatic resolution of the issues surrounding Iran’s nuclear program, and I found that in both places”.

Islamnews.ru reported that in his interview to Voice of America, Levey accused Azerbaijan and Turkey in extending economic relations with Iran.
