Azerbaijani MP: Azerbaijan is more important for West than Armenia

06 October 2010 [16:04] - TODAY.AZ
“The risk of renewed hostilities has greatly increased in our region lately. Armenia has provoked such a situation with its unwillingness to continue peace talks at least with the intensity as it was before 2010. Armenia has been engaged in ill-concealed imitation of the peaceful negotiations for a long time,” member of the Azerbaijani Parliament Zahid Oruj said.

“On the other hand, frequent skirmishes and tension on the contact line of troops have become a matter of a serious concern for extra-regional community. EU, Council of Europe and NATO have already voiced their thoughts in connection with this problem. They clearly indicate that they don’t want hostilities to resume. We must also bear in mind renewed Armenian-Azerbaijani war would also play into hands of some external forces,” Oruj added.

“I think that the statement made by Azerbaijani Foreign Minister in Brussels at a meeting of the North Atlantic Council purports to achieve increased international pressure on Armenia. It is known that the Alliance is conducting a very cautious policy with regard to Armenia, because Armenia is actively engaged in creating Russia's security system.”

“However, NATO still has quite a lot of possibilities and mechanisms at the international level. I think the Alliance is very concerned about the escalation of tension on the frontline, and the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister in his statement clearly pointed to the source of possible undesirable events in the South Caucasus, and who should be brought into a sense with concrete steps. And, of course, it is obvious that Azerbaijan is more important for Western countries, who make up the backbone of NATO, than Armenia from an economic perspective. I believe that by this statement Baku tried to encourage NATO to demonstrate its position in the Karabakh issue more openly and clearly,” the MP noted.
