Azerbaijan and Latvia enjoy high level relations, which are rapidly developing, Ogtay Asadov, Speaker of Azerbaijan's Parliament, told visiting Latvian ex-president Vaira Vike-Freiberga.
“The role of the heads of state in this sense is of great importance,” he added.

Asadov said Euro Atlantic integration was among key priorities in Azerbaijan`s foreign policy.

“Official Baku attaches great importance to cooperation with the United Nations and the European Union. We are closely cooperating with UNICEF, UNESCO, UNHCR and other bodies and implementing joint projects with them.”

On the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Asadov highlighted the importance of the UN General Assembly resolutions demanding an unconditional withdrawal of the Armenian armed forces from the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.

He said “however, the organization, which is the guarantor of peace and security in the globe, must carry out some reforms”.

He added, that the UN must not “close its eyes to Armenia`s ignoring its resolutions”.

The Speaker praised a proposal by Vike-Freiberga concerning the appointment of the UN`s special representative on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Asadov also talked about interparliamentary relations between Azerbaijan and Latvia, praising the role of friendship groups. Vike-Freiberga said Baku became “a modern and beautiful city” in last five years. She vowed to support Azerbaijan in its cooperation with the European Union.
