Georgian FM denies plans to create Georgian-Azerbaijani confederation

10 September 2010 [11:20] - TODAY.AZ
Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze has refuted the information on the intention to create Georgian-Azerbaijani confederation. Vashadze said that an initiative by the Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili to establish the Georgian-Azerbaijani confederation was made "in the context, stressing the special good-neighborly relations established between Georgia and Azerbaijan."

"President needs to be carefully listened to. He has repeatedly said that the relations between Azerbaijan and Georgia came out of the framework of strategic relations and actually assumed the character of relations between countries in the confederation. It does not mean that we would create a single legal framework, combine the legislature and the Constitution. We say that Georgia and Azerbaijan have close and coordinated relations," said Vashadze.

Previously the Deputy Foreign Minister of Georgia Nino Kalandadze said that the will to create the confederation was expressed, and it needs to agree upon technical issues. "The president spoke and now it is the work of diplomats," she said.
