
Speaker of Azerbaijani Milli Majlis (Parliament) Ogtay Asadov met Iraq`s new ambassador Heydar Shiya Gubeysi al-Barrak today. Asadov congratulated the ambassador on his new appointment and wished him success in his career. The Speaker expressed hope during his tenure the diplomat would contribute to developing cooperation between Azerbaijan and Iraq. He said Azerbaijan attaches special importance to cooperation with Iraq. Asadov also pointed out as part of the US-led anti-terrorism campaign Azerbaijani peacekeepers serve in Iraq to ensure stability and security.
According to him, the Azerbaijani leadership is determined to boost the relationship with Iraq.
He underlined the necessity of deepening trade and economic cooperation between the two countries. Asadov also said, his country would always support Iraq to promote democracy, strengthen economy, sovereignty and security. Asadov also praised the fact that Iraq supports Azerbaijan`s position within international organizations including the UN and OIC.
He also noted Azerbaijan was keen on development of interparliamentary ties with Iraq.
For his part, the Iraqi ambassador said his country was interested in expansion of relations with Azerbaijan, and underlined the necessity of deepening bilateral trade and economic cooperation.
Touching upon the Nagorno Karabakh conflict the diplomat said his country supports Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity. The ambassador also vowed he would spare no efforts to contribute to strengthening the relationship between Azerbaijan and Iraq.
