Azerbaijani expert: Almaty meeting of Azerbaijani and Armenian FMs is infamous result of OSCE Minsk Group's 18-year activity

The Almaty meeting of the Azerbaijani and Armenian foreign ministers is an infamous result of 18-year activity of the OSCE Minsk Group, director of the Azerbaijan-based Center for Political Innovation and Technologies, political analyst Mubariz Ahmedoglu said at a press conference on Wednesday.

"All made sure that Armenia will not liberate one inch of land peacefully. This makes a war necessary. There is no such a mission as the OSCE Minsk Group in the whole civilized world, which would damage the mediation mission," he said.

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov and Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian met within the informal summit of OSCE member states in Almaty on July 17.

He said that now even more intense and more uncertain phase in the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict begins.

"The activity of the OSCE Minsk Group has made inevitable the war in Nagorno-Karabakh. Co-chairmen led Armenia and Azerbaijan to the battlefield," he said.

In conclusion, political scientist said that Azerbaijani and Armenian communities of Nagorno-Karabakh must solve the status of Nagorno-Karabakh and its future together.

"Even if Azerbaijan does not officially suspend talks, it must break relations with the OSCE Minsk Group," he said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts. Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994.

The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group - Russia, France, and the U.S. - are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh region and the occupied territories.
