Russian expert: Common ground of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict sides can be found through web communications

28 June 2010 [13:25] - TODAY.AZ
Under the current circumstances over the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, some common ground can be found through web communications, Deputy dean of history chair of Moscow State University, Dr. Alexei Vlasov said.
"In perspective, they would allow for some rapprochement and trust between the Armenian and Azerbaijani societies. It is possible to create a more tolerant environment and tolerance for each other between young people," Vlasov said in his interview with PanARMENIAN.Net Agency.

Steps towards reconciliation can be taken by internet community, he said.

"When Armenian and Azerbaijani youth can hold an online forum avoiding mutual accusations, a real breakthrough will be registered in Karabakh process," the political scientist said.

Mediators in the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement often behave as in the fable of "swan, cancer and pike," said Vlasov. "Separately, they all want peace, but when they start to model the Nagorno-Karabakh settlement, the effect of divergent interests appears," he said.

According to Vlasov, the activities of the OSCE Minsk Group have been continuing for more than 15 years, but they have produced no clear results up to now.

"I understand the leadership of Azerbaijan, as far as there are Madrid principles, the parties should express their position on them clearly, and moderators must help them in this regard," he said.

According to the political scientist, meanwhile, Washington is having a hard time after the failure of the Armenian-Turkish process, so it has taken a break.

"Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's position is understandable that the pause can not last forever and the consolidate the steps of the moderators are necessary," said Vlasov.
