Azerbaijan's consulate general in Yekaterinburg has organized an official reception marking May 28th – the Republic Day.
Consul General Sultan Gasimov highlighted the holiday's history.

“92 years ago - on May 28th, 1918 – the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, a first democracy in the Muslim East, was established.” Gasimov described the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic as “a constitutional and secular state”, saying: “It was a first state in the Muslim East which granted the right to vote to women.”

He also praised national leader Heydar Aliyev's services to Azerbaijan, saying “he saved the country when it was on the verge of losing its independence in 1993”.

“The national leader's returning to power was what helped to stabilize the situation,” added Gasimov.

The consul general also praised President Ilham Aliyev's role in Azerbaijan's development, saying “led by the president, the country has been resolutely moving forward on the path towards all-round development and progress”.

Lyudmila Babushkina, chairwoman of Sverdlovsk's Upper House, and Alexander Kharlov, deputy Chairman of the Sverdlovsk Government, congratulated the Azerbaijani people on the occasion.
The event featured a film on Azerbaijan's history and a concert of Azerbaijani musicians.
