Azerbaijani analyst: Erdogan showed the world that Turkey is willing to compromise unlike Armenia

14 April 2010 [11:50] - TODAY.AZ
"I'm sure that Erdogan will not back down on his words to support Azerbaijan in the Karabakh problem,” Azerbaijani political expert Zardusht Alizade said.

There is agreement to solve the conflict based on the Madrid principles on the table of talks on Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict and possible compromises at this stage, the expert said.

"Azerbaijan has agreed to compromise, but Serzh Sargsyan is a hostage of situation he created himself. After overthrowing Levon Ter-Petrosyan who was ready to compromise, Robert Kocharian and Serzh Sargsyan saw that the world is not at all what they think in their minds. The world is different and they must take into account the interests of other states."

"Today, Sargsyan faces a dilemma. There will be no progress in Nagorno-Karabakh negotiations if he actually says they will make no step back from an imaginary "genocide" and no step back from their historic victory over Turk-Azeri enemy in Karabakh. Neither will the Turkish Parliament ratify the protocols in this case,” the analyst said.

In this situation, Armenian President will hope that the West will press on Turkey, the expert added.

"What resources does the West have for this? The "Armenian genocide" has been recognized by dozens of countries, but any serious international lawyer can tell you that it will bring about nothing wrong and no legal consequences for Turkey. This is a useless legal act, it is an excuse to deteriorate the US-Turkish relations, but it is not an effective lever to exert pressure on Turkey. It is just not pleasant to the moral, but in the same way, Turkey may take retaliatory steps that would not be pleasing to America. "

However, the political expert says, America and Turkey are tightly linked to each other, they are have been strategic partners for more than half a century both within NATO and in terms of the Middle East interests.

"I think Armenia will not be able to take a step to advance the settlement of the Karabakh conflict soon. Because many people both in opposition and government believe that the presidential post brings huge dividends and they want to seize it. Sargsyan is not omnipotent, and space for him to maneuver is very limited. This is the Achilles' heel of the Armenian opposition. They betray their real national interests for the sake of some fantastic goals.”

“Whatever the outcome of meetings in Washington is, Erdogan showed American leadership and the whole world that he is ready to meet and talk, that he was willing to compromise, but Armenia is not ready for this. Armenia is still hoping that someone will reckon with its whims,” Alizade said.
