Experts comment on former presidential candidate's launching new front in Iran

17 July 2009 [10:12] - TODAY.AZ
Ex-candidate for the Iranian president Mir-Hossein Mousavi plans to set up a political front in the nearest future which makes authorities concerned This political front gives hope for opposition members for possible political changes in Iran. But both authority and opposition are doubtful of creation of new political union under current conditions.
"There was no opportunity to create political front in Iran for the last 30 years. Current authority also has such opportunity. Iranian current authority is militarized authority of Sepah. Military men make decisions about creation of any party or political front in this government. I think they will not give any opportunity to create any new political union," Iranian famous expert Hossein Lajevardi said.

Representatives of current authority think that actions of opposition, especially Mousavi and his supporters, undermined trust of authorities by violating all laws in Iran. So, creation of political front depends on willingness and readiness of Mousavi and his supporters to observe the law.

"Creation of any party, front, political movement is possible but with one condition. Their activity must be implemented within the law. Mr. Mousavi and his supporters operated without the law. So, if Mousavi intends to create political front, first he must follow norms determined by the state," vice-president of parliamentary commission on Iranian security Esmaeil Kosari told Trend News over phone.

Iranian media reported earlier this week that ex-candidate for president Mir-Hossein Mousavi plans to set up new political front in the nearest future. His decision was supported by credible political figures. The first groups recommended Mousavi to create this political front and welcomed his decisions was the Kargozaran party (Servants of the Construction Party). The party expressed readiness to join Mousavi's political group.

Last presidential elections revealed shortage of strong political organizations in Iran that reduced chances for people to express their will. According to Kargozaran party spokesperson Hussein Marashi, Iranian last events proved that it would be possible to avoid events occurred after presidential elections on June 12 by having this front. He said that the front will defend people's rights, right for freedom and right for future determination upon the constitution.

Presently, creation of new political front is under question despite determination of Mousavi and his supporters and right for creation of political parties and unions indicated in the Iranian constitution.

According to chairman of Association of Iranian Researchers, Lajevardi, Iranian state newspaper Keyhan said  creation of political front is inadmissible. The Iranian government will not give permission to create opposition political block taking into account that all parties must be registered with the interior ministry.

Perhaps, representatives of the Iranian government foresee hidden threat for current authorities in this political union. So, they are determined towards separated opposition.

"Mousavi and his supporters crushed all Iranian laws by their actions. Those who gives permission to create this front will be responsible to authorities, the parliament and people," Kosari said.

But if Mousavi and his supporters succeed in realizing their political plans, the front is likely to be under tough control of authorities like Iranian entire political system.

Presently, political front established by Mousavi will not be able to be political power that can resist current government, famous U.S expert on Middle East, Kenneth Katzman, said. Mousavi's further success depends on solidarity of those who supported him at Tehran streets after results of presidential elections were announced.

"I believe that the authorities will likely keep close supervision over the offices and members of Mousavi's political front, and will monitor thier activities in order to complicate their work. It is most likely that Mousavi's success, if there is success, would come from mobilizing his supporters in street demonstrations and not from electoral activities on the part of his new political front."
