No mediator is able to change situation around Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: political expert

16 July 2009 [11:25] - TODAY.AZ
“There will be no progress at the meeting of the Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents because the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has reached deadlock," Vice President of the Russian Political Technologies Center Sergei Mikheyev said.
"The sides take quite different positions and I don’t think that there is a mediator in the world who is able to change this situation”, Sergei Mikheyev, Vice President of the Russian Political Technologies Center, said.

“Unfortunately no Russia, no America, no European Union nor UN is able to change the essence of the conflict. I think the negotiations are needed not to let the situation to deteriorate. The sides will reiterate their commitment to the peaceful solution to the conflict in Moscow again, but, on the other hand, there will be no progress”.

The analyst expressed his opinion about the White House statement on the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

“Both Armenia and Azerbaijan consider Nagorno-Karabakh to be its own territory. Therefore the situation will not be changed despite the White House statement. There is no need to exaggerate the G8 statement. Who is G8? They can make some decision, but what can they change in real situation? If they are so competent politicians, why they couldn’t solve one of the conflicts so far? The White House statement is meaningless because the interests of Azerbaijan and Armenia don’t coincide. If the sides or one of them does not ease position, nothing will be changed," Mikheyev said.
