The Council of Europe is aware that Armenian people are poor and therefore, they should be treated with mercy and supported", said speaker of parliament Oqtay Asadov speaking at the spring session of Milli Medjlis expressing his attitude towards appointment of a PACE special rapporteur on political prisoners in Azerbaijan.
"Azerbaijan is developing successfully and double standards are applied to us to equalize us to other states. Let them appoint 10 more rapporteurs, we are not concerned with it", noted he.
The speaker of parliament said if European parliamentarians wish to study the situation with provision of human rights and liberties in Azerbaijan, they can come and familiarize with existing realities on the spot.
"Milli Medjlis has already adopted two acts of amnesty under which thousands of people were released. These issues do not bother us. If they wish to study the situation, established in Azerbaijan after 2007, let them come and study", noted Asadov.
Deputy of parliament Zahid Oruj appealed to his colleagues with a proposal to protest against appointment of the CE special rapporteur on political prisoners in Azerbaijan.
"This issue should be settled, yet a new page was opened in it for some reason. The emergency situation was declared in Armenia for a month after the presidential elections, with activity of all mass medias restricted, people were killed and arrested and the activity of political parties was stopped. Different provisions were put forward against Yerevan, yet the rapporteur on political prisoners was not appointed for Armenia, which is disgraceful", noted he.
