14 March 2009 [12:43] - TODAY.AZ
The CIS observation mission for the referendum positively assesses the preparation for the elections in the regions of Azerbaijan.
The observers from the CIS led by the head of mission office Yevgeni Slobodo already visited polling stations in Baku, Khachmaz and Tovuz regions of Azerbaijan. "The visit showed that the preparation for the referendum takes place in accordance with the Electoral Code," Slobodo told Trend News on March 14. "Today we will leave for Shamakhi to study the situation," he said.

Azerbaijan will hold a referendum on March 18 to amend 29 Articles of the Constitution.

The Constitution was adopted in 1995. Amendments and additions were made in 2002.

The CIS observation mission arrived in Azerbaijan on March 6 to hold monitoring of referendum process. The mission includes more than 50 people. The delegation is headed by the Deputy Chairman of the CIS Executive Committee, Toktasin Buzubayev.

The representatives of the mission held meetings with the referendum initiative group, Slobodo said.

The Central Election Commission has registered the New Azerbaijan, City, Progress, Law and Democracy, Civil Society, For Sustainable Development, Intellect, Movement for Karabakh and Republic and Republicans initiative groups. The Prosperous Village, Free Speech, Azerbaijan People's Republic and National Independence initiative groups were denied registration.

A short-term delegation headed by Buzubayev will arrive in Baku on March 15.

"Starting from March 16, Buzubayev will start holding meetings, visiting polling stations," Slobodo said.
