03 December 2008 [11:00] - TODAY.AZ
The Council of Europe following the United States called on Azerbaijan to reject plans to halt broadcasting of BBC, Voice of America and Liberty radio stations in the country.
"I am astonished at the plans to halt broadcasting of these radio stations and will discuss this issue with official representatives of Azerbaijan to learn to which this decision is bound", said CE secretary general Terry Davis", according to Reuters.

"The Azerbaijani government must be aware that the freedom of expression is the most important European value", noted he.

At the same time he confessed that sometimes he is also not pleased with BBC programs, however, if any radio stations voice criticism, it does not mean that they must be closed".

It should be reminded that in late October of head of the National Television and Radio Council Nushirevan Meherremli stated the intention to stop transmission of western radio stations on national frequencies from 2009.
