“I think this implies not only radio stations but also the freedom of speech. Why so tough? Because media is the most problematic sphere.
Yes, the country wants to shutdown the foreign radio stations, but the government also has problems with the national press. Reports of the international organizations say that freedom of speech is restricted in Azerbaijan”, noted Herkel.
The PACE co-rapporteur noted that the prohibition of these radio stations will not be effective.
“I hope this issue will be reviewed”, said Herkel.
Earlier chairman of the National Television and Radio Council Nushirevan Meherremli said that transmission of foreign radio stations will be stopped in January of 2009.
