19 August 2008 [16:01] - TODAY.AZ
The CE observation mission to monitor presidential elections in Azerbaijan will arrive in Baku on September 16.
Day.Az reports with reference to Azadlyg radio that the due announcement was made by Andres Herkel, PACE co-rapporteur on Azerbaijan and head of the observation mission.

He said the mission will study the election situation in the country and make a statement regarding this situation.

He said the mission members will hold meetings with presidential candidates, their representatives, as well as representatives of NGOs, Central Election Commission, persons, responsible for conduction of elections.

Herkel reminded that the report on Azerbaijan's observation of commitments before the Council of Europe was presented in late June and they are now waiting to see how the commitments are being fulfilled.

"I want to say that Azerbaijan should eliminate shortcomings and improve the election situation. As for our assessment of the level of fulfilling commitments, as well as the pre-election situation, we will fix it in our statement", said Herkel.
