Vafa Quluzade: "Turkish leadership will give explanations to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on the issue of Armenian-Turkish talks in Switzerland"

24 July 2008 [14:09] - TODAY.AZ
Day.Az interview with famous political scientist Vafa Quluzade.
- As is known, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev left for Turkey to take part in the ground-breaking ceremony of the Turkish section of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railroad. Do you think the issues of confidential Armenian-Turkish talks in Switzerland will be discussed during the visit of our President to Turkey?

- Certainly, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev established warm and trusty relations both with President of Turkey Abdulla Gul and Prime Minister Erdogan. Naturally, during the meeting, they will discuss not only the issues to be covered in details by the press, but also what diplomats prefer not to highlight. I am sure that the Turkish leadership will give explanations to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev about all issues, concerning him, including about the Armenian-Turkish talks in Switzerland. I am sure that Azerbaijani-Turkish relations will remain on the highest level.

- How then would you comment on the announcements of some mass medias that the agenda of confidential Armenian-Turkish relations in Switzerland contained creation of 4 joint commissions?

- The unofficial Turkish-Armenian relations have existed for long. There are no official and expanded trade relations between Turkey and Armenia. Their absence is caused by Turkey's demand to Armenia to stop hostile and anti-Turkish propaganda, particularly, inexistent "genocide of Armenians" of 1915 and Turkey's demand to free the Azerbaijani lands, occupied by Armenia under Russia's support.

Notably, the situation in our region tends to change: West starts attacking the Caucasus. Particularly, representatives of Germany have already initiated active mediatory work in the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict, which is extremely bothering for Russia. One of the main goals of this company is Armenia's separation from Russia.

And in this sense the Armenian-Turkish talks, held in Switzerland should be considered. But to speak about their possible damage to Azerbaijan would be incorrect, as in case of normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations, Armenia will separate from Russia and make a real step in the direction of NATO membership, which will have a positive influence on the just resolution of Nagorno Karabakh conflict, which implies return of Armenian occupied Azerbaijani territories.

- Will Russia watch the attacks of the West to the Caucasus and the attempts to separate Armenia from it quietly?

- Georgia was even more important for Russia in the plan of geopolitical confrontation with the West. But we remember well how easy Russia gave up in combat for this country, signing an agreement on the withdrawal of military troops from Georgia at the Istanbul summit in 1999.

Naturally, the Kremlin can not be satisfied today that "Russia's outpost in the Caucasus" starts active negotiations with NATO member- Turkey. But Russia does not have mechanism of confrontation to the west and it yields under NATO's attack.

It would be enough to watch the history of Russia's confrontation with the West to see how official Moscow gave up in case with former Yugoslavia, Baltic states and how it withdrew its military bases from Asia to understand that its capacities fall behind its ambitions and Kremlin's defeat in combat for Armenia is clear, while normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations will become one of the components of this defeat.
