Andres Herkel: "Criminal cases against the three journalists in Azerbaijan are trumped-up"

The due statement was made by PACE co-rapporteur on Azerbaijan Andres Herkel during a press conference by results of the visit to Azerbaijan.

Herkel noted that while speaking to Azerbaijani officials he said the imprisonment of the journalists affects the image of Azerbaijan.

"The situation is the most complicated on the case of the Azadlyg newspaper. The pressure on journalists of this newspaper caused them quit the job, thus reducing their number from 40 to 20 people. This makes us state that the situation with freedom of media has worsened in Azerbaijan", said Herkel.
