Confrontation in new Open Society Party

16 April 2007 [22:03] - TODAY.AZ
The Constituent Congress of Open Society Party (OSP) was not democratic. Democratic principles have been violated completely, said the member of Organization Committee on Preparations to Congress and OSP Supreme Assembly's member Jala Jafarova.

Expressing her dissatisfaction on non-discussion of Rasul Guliyev's letter addressed to the congress of party, Jafarova said that she does not consider right non-holding discussions on candidacy to Party.

"So, democratic principles were violated," she told the APA.

Jafarova also expressed her dissatisfaction on carrying out constituent congress of OSP under the symbol of Musavat.

"Measures should be taken beforehand and symbols on party should be hanged in the hall. I do not consider right the change of party's name. A lot of people objected to renaming the Party during break. But no one was against it in the voting. Only two people voted against it, and one of them was me. Because, 5-6 people remained there. ADP's representatives, active members are on the side of Rasul Guliyev. I am not satisfied with the party's name at all. First of all, debate should have been held on this issue. Proper name should be chosen. On the other hand we have no right to be named Democratic Party," she added.

Jafarova said some opinions on the change of party's name were sounded at the meetings of Organization Committee on Preparations to Congress but it was not accepted seriously.

"There was not any debate on the name in the party and the opinion of members on it was not asked," she said.

OSP's head Akif Shahbazov told the APA these sayings are not true and the congress was held democratically and transparently. Shahbazov did not agreed with Jafarova's comments on assertion of candidates put forward by Rasul Guliyev without debate.

"Any member of the congress was free to express his opinion on it. We base on the majority of congress representatives while making a decision. Majority responded positively to the above said issues," he said.

He said 401 people voted for the change of the Party's name, only Jafarova was against it.

"We can not put the majority aside and base on one person's opinion," he said.
