Ombudsman presents annual report to Parliament

Ombudsman's annual report was debated in today’s sitting of Azerbaijani parliament.

Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova said that 7,500 appeals were received in 2006. 94.7% of them are complaints and 5.3% applications.

"38.3% were connected with violation of civil and political rights, 61.7% with economic-social and cultural rights. 46.9% of the complaints were considered, 38% of them were met," she said.

The parliamentarians said that some of the points in the report should be investigated. Sabir Rustemkhanli said that ombudsman should investigate the issue on the imprisonment of several journalists. Panah Huseyn said that there is no progress in the sphere of defense of human rights.

As APA reports, Aydin MIrzezadeh said that the state of human rights in Azerbaijan is improving.

The Ombudsman's report was approved after discussions.

Agreement on "Qualifying diplomatic representatives between Foreign Ministries of GUAM countries", decision on "GUAM procedures, regulations of the secretariat and approval of financial regulations", joining the treaty of the World Postal Union, law on "Pensions" were also discussed at the sitting.
