Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has said that the Armenian government led by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is solely responsible for the ongoing war in Nagorno-Karabakh and ensuing casualties.

President Ilham Aliyev made this statement at his meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in Baku on 1 November.

“Today, the responsibility for the continuation of the war and losses on both sides lies squarely on Pashinyan and his ugly deeds. All responsibility lies on Armenia, and if it admits its defeat and leaves our lands, the most acceptable option is to resolve the issue at the negotiating table. In short, the solution to this problem is already happening,” Aliyev said at the meeting.

The president expressed the hope that all fundamental principles on the solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will be implemented and Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity will be restored.

The fundamental principles envisage the return of seven districts located around Nagorno-Karabakh and the return of Azerbaijani refugees to the region, including the ancient Azerbaijani city of Shusha. These approaches are, in principle, based on four UN Security Council resolutions, which require practically the same.

President Aliyev said that Armenia prevented Azerbaijan from solving the problem at the negotiating table.

I have repeatedly stated during this period that we want this issue to be resolved at the negotiating table. However, Armenia does not allow this to happen, has grossly violated the ceasefire declared three times, including the bombing of Ganja with ballistic missiles, then the bombing of the city of Barda, as a result of which we had numerous casualties... This is the main reason why this war continues. If Armenia gives up its ugly deeds, then a ceasefire will be ensured and the issue will be resolved at the table,” the president added.

Aliyev said that Armenia had already acknowledged its defeat.

As you know, the prime minister of Armenia recently sent a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin. This letter is, in fact, an acknowledgement of defeat because Russia has been asked for military support although there is no legal basis for that. Azerbaijan is conducting its military operation on the territory of Azerbaijan, which is recognized by the international community. No operations are carried out on the territory of Armenia and we have no such plans,” he said.

The president added that despite defeat Pashinyan did not want to give up.

President Aliyev thanked Cavusoglu for Turkey’s political and moral support from the first days of the war.

“Your visit once again demonstrates Turkish-Azerbaijani solidarity... This political and moral support certainly inspires us, and we continue our just cause,” he said.

Aliyev briefed Cavusoglu that in total, about 200 settlements had been liberated and that the process was underway. He also thanked Turkish journalists for their active efforts to inform the international audiences about the situation in Azerbaijan.

In turn, Cavusoglu said that Turkey was proud of fraternal Azerbaijan for its victories on the battlefield.

“We are proud of your victories on the battlefield. You have shown the power of Turks to the whole world. We are very proud! Hopefully, we will return our ancient lands with these successful operations,” he told Aliyev.

He stressed that Aliyev had shown to the world that Azerbaijan is a strong state.

Despite all these advantages, the advantage on the battlefield, the legal advantage and the fact that we are right, Azerbaijan, under your leadership, has shown to the world that it is a strong state and nation in the ceasefire and negotiations. There are those who understand this, there are those who do not understand this and there are those who do not want to understand this,” Cavusoglu said.

Cavusoglu pledged that Azerbaijan and Turkey will further strengthen solidarity to defend Azerbaijan's just cause.

“Everyone sees what Armenia is doing and that it violates the ceasefire every time. But there are many who do not want to say that, and we are aware of that. For this reason, we will continue to defend our cause by further strengthening our solidarity,” he said.
