Armenian army breaks ceasefire, opens fire at Azerbaijani positions

Armenian armed forces have 20 times violated the ceasefire on the line of contact between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops over the past 24 hours, said Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry July 26.

Armenian armed forces, stationed on the nameless heights of Armenia’s Noyemberyan and Krasnoselsk districts, opened fire at positions of Azerbaijani armed forces on the nameless heights of Gazakh and Gadabay districts.

Azerbaijani positions also took fire from the positions located near the village of Ashagi Seyidahmadli of Fizuli district and Kuropatkino of Khojavend district.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
