22 July 2016 [19:20] - TODAY.AZ

Azerbaijani journalism praises President Ilham Aliyev’s merits and supports his calls in practice, Ali Hasanov, Azerbaijani president’s aide for public and political affairs, said July 22.

The top official made the remarks during an event dedicated to the 141st anniversary of Azerbaijan’s National Press July 22.

Hasanov congratulated all media representatives and journalists on the 141st anniversary of Azerbaijan’s national press and noted that the important role of the national press, which has come a difficult, but an honorable development path, in enlightening the people, popularizing the national values, its irreplaceable contribution to the development of Azerbaijani statehood, gives grounds to talk about its glorious history with a sense of pride.

After returning to power, Azerbaijan’s National Leader Heydar Aliyev was constantly giving consideration to the development of media, said Hasanov, adding that namely Heydar Aliyev declared July 22, the date of the start of ‘Ekinchi’ newspaper’s publishing, the National Press Day in Azerbaijan.

“Heydar Aliyev turned the freedom of expression and press, as well as the pluralism of opinions into a constitution norm in Azerbaijan. In 1998, he cancelled the censorship which was established in 1992 and was a serious obstacle to the development of the national press,” said Hasanov.

“The Ministry of Press and Information was liquidated in 2000 and Azerbaijan abandoned the state control over media,” he added. “Thanks to the political will of the national leader and his great efforts, a democratic legislative framework regulating the activities of media outlets was created in Azerbaijan and there was established a basis of progressive traditions in relations between the state and media.”

Hasanov pointed out that currently, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev successfully continues the media policy and traditions, the foundation of which was laid by Heydar Aliyev.

Creating and developing independent, powerful media outlets which provide objective information and adhere to the principles of statehood and national interests and are able to protect Azerbaijan’s fair position in the global information space, is the philosophy of President Aliyev’s media policy, according to the top official.

“It should be taken into account that under the conditions of expanding global network, disappearing borders of national information spaces, strengthening monopoly of transnational resources over the flow of information, the fulfillment of these tasks is essential for every state and people who try to preserve their independence, identity, national and spiritual values and historical traditions,” he added.

Hasanov pointed out that Azerbaijani journalism praises President Ilham Aliyev’s merits and supports his actions.

“It is not accidental that the country’s journalists named Ilham Aliyev “The Friend of Journalists” in 2010 and 2013,” said the top official.
