
UN and GUAM have adopted draft resolution to strengthen links between the two organizations on December 17.
Azerbaijani UN Permanent Representative Aqshin Mehdiyev made his proposals on “Cooperation between UN and Organization for Democracy and Economic Development – GUAM” draft resolution. “During its activity in past 15 years GUAM has turned to a regional organization which promotes democracy and economic development”, the UN Representative said.
Mr. Mehdiyev noted since UN granted observer status to GUAM in 2004, partnership between the two countries have been encouraged. “The adoption of the draft resolution will force for the strengthening links even more, while benefiting for the peace, stability and progress in the region”, he stressed.
Armenian Permanent Representative to UN opposed his speech saying, “The discussions are not held transparently”. Unrelated to the subject, he told Azerbaijan is holding economic blockade to Armenia.
“Armenian diplomats also participated in the discussions, but they didn’t propose any notes or offers,” Aqshin Mehdiyev clarified.
Azerbaijani Permanent Representative recalling Armenia`s occupation of Azerbaijani territories and ethnic cleansing policy pursued by the country in the region, added “official Yerevan is the guilty to blockade itself”.
The Resolution of GUAM sees activities of promotion cooperation on trading, energy, economics, progress, transport, science, education, culture, sports, youth and health in the region. It also calls for partnership in the struggle against terrorism, human trafficking, drugs and criminal organizations. GUAM stressing importance of strengthening cooperation and dialogue with UN, invited organizations, programs and funds under UN to cooperation for carrying out the joint projects.
The resolution also wishes UN General Assembly to carry out appropriate reporting on its 69th session.
