In advance of World AIDS Day [December 1, 2012], Russia’s capital Moscow on Nov. 30 hosted a charity event to support the anti-HIV "Red Ribbon" campaign under the motto "Believe and do".

The action dedicated to the fight against “the plague of the 20th century” was organized by the UN Office in the Russian Federation, UNAIDS with the assistance of the UN Information Centre in Moscow and the Azerbaijani Youth Organization of Russia (AYOR) led by Leyla Aliyeva. AYOR in this partnership project was represented by the Azerbaijani club of the First Moscow State Medical University named after Sechenov.

Member of AYOR Samir Aliyev said, it is gratifying to note that the AYOR has become a partner of such a big event. According to Aliyev, the start of joint cooperation between AYOR and UNAIDS was given earlier in October of 2010 with a joint project under the slogan "Youth against HIV and drug addiction." As part of this project representatives of AYOR held various events in Moscow, Russian regions and Sudan.

Head of UNAIDS in Europe and Central Asia, Jean-Elie Malkin, expressed satisfaction with cooperation with AYOR and thanked Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva for her active support. "We feel this support while conducting this important and relevant project among youth," he stressed.

A banner of AYOR and a large red were installed in the foyer as a symbol of the fight against the disease.

The charity event held on the stage of the Stanislavsky Drama Theatre in Moscow, was attended by CIS stars of the entertainment industry, artists, diplomats, national health officials, representatives of non-profit and humanitarian organizations, beauty and fashion companies.
World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. World AIDS Day was the first ever global health day and the first one was held in 1988.
Around 100,000 are currently living with HIV in the UK and globally an estimated 34 million people have HIV. More than 25 million people between 1981 and 2007 have died from the virus, making it one of the most destructive pandemics in history.

Today, many scientific advances have been made in HIV treatment, there are laws to protect people living with HIV and we understand so much more about the condition. But despite this, people do not know the facts about how to protect themselves and others from HIV, and stigma and discrimination remain a reality for many people living with HIV.

World AIDS Day is important as it reminds the public and Government that HIV has not gone away – there is still a vital need to raise money, increase awareness, fight prejudice and improve education. World AIDS Day is an opportunity to learn the facts about HIV and put the knowledge into action.

Azerbaijani Youth Organization of Russia or AYOR is an all-Russian youth organization established on April 18, 2009 in Moscow, Russia. Chairwoman of the organization is Leyla Aliyeva – vice-president of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and editor-in-chief of “Baku” magazine. Headquarter of the organization is in Moscow, the capital of Russia.
