Monument to Mirza Fatali Akhundzade erected in Moscow - PHOTOS

Monument to Mirza Fatali Akhundzade (Akhundov), a celebrated Azerbaijani author, playwright, philosopher, and founder of modern literary criticism, has been unveiled in Russia’s capital Moscow.

The monument created by Surikov Moscow State Academic Art Institute graduate Zaur Rzayev, was installed at atrium of Margarita Rudomino All-Russia State Library for Foreign Literature (LFL) by common efforts of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, LFL and the Embassy of Azerbaijan to Russia.

Addressing the event, director of the Library Yekaterina Geniyeva named the unveiling of the monument to Mirza Fatali Akhundzade as an “important event in the cultural life of two countries.”

Ambassador of Azerbaijan to RF Polad Bulbuloglu said we are witnessing the opening of a monument to a person who laid down the foundations of the Azerbaijan-Russia friendship.”

The inauguration of a monument featured extracts from Mirza Fatali Akhundzade’s “Eastern Poem” in the performance of students of the Moscow State Linguistic University.

Akhundzade singlehandedly opened a new stage of development of Azerbaijani literature. He was also the founder of materialism and atheism movement in Azerbaijan.
