MP: Azerbaijan's participation in NAM played role in country’s election to UNSC

10 May 2012 [10:37] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan's joining the Non-Aligned Movement played a positive role in the country's election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC), MP Rasim Musabeyov told Trend on Wednesday.

"Azerbaijan, weighing the pros and cons and to some extent seeking to show that it is not going to join the Collective Security Treaty Organization under Russia or NATO, joined the Non-Aligned Movement," Musabeyov said.

According to Musabeyov, it is unlikely this move could provide serious political support, but Azerbaijan's accession to the Non-Aligned Movement affected the voting for the country's accession to the UNSC.

"Moreover, now the process of recognizing Armenian aggression, the Khojaly genocide's recognition in Latin American countries and Pakistan is underway, and this process will continue. Azerbaijan can mobilize certain support in this matter within the Non-Aligned
Movement," Musabeyov said.

He said Azerbaijan does not lose anything from taking part in the movement and it in fact receives more political support.

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov is attending a ministerial of the Non-Aligned Movement member countries in Sharm el-Sheikh (Egypt) on May 9-10, the ministry said.

Mammadyarov will address the ministerial and will hold a series of bilateral meetings within the event.

Azerbaijan became a member of the Non-Aligned Movement in May 2011.

The Non-Aligned Movement is the second largest political international organization for its members after the UN. It includes 118 states.

Another 20 countries have observer status.
