'Russian-Azerbaijani relations develop'

06 April 2012 [08:14] - TODAY.AZ
The visit of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to the two South Caucasus states is associated with processes taking place in this region, while at the same time it reflects the bilateral relations, Deputy Executive Secretary of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (NAP), MP Mubariz Gurbanly told the party's official website.

"In foreign policy of President Ilham Aliyev relations with Russia occupy an important place. Russia is a large state in the region, it has the potential to influence both from economic and political points of view, not only in the region, but throughout the Eurasian region. Azerbaijani-Russian relations are at a level of strategic partnership," said Gurbanly.

He said the relations between the two countries in economic, humanitarian and other spheres have always developed and will develop.

"Azerbaijan is a leading country in the region. Our country is actively involved in ongoing projects in the region, and without his consent and participation it is impossible to implement a project. The talks held during the visit of Lavrov, showed that the Russian-Azerbaijani relations are developing. Discussion on the resolution of Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh conflict by peaceful means especially attract. An important question for us is new developments in Russia's position on the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh. Russia is a co-chair of OSCE Minsk Group. Lavrov's statements both in Yerevan and in Baku showed that Russia will continue to support the peace process and that it is in favor of an intensification of the negotiations. Today Russia observes process of transferring power to the new head of state after the presidential election. Naturally, after Vladimir Putin takes office, more intense and great changes can be observed in Russia's policy in the South Caucasus in connection with this conflict," Gurbanly stressed.

Lavrov's visit reflects the details of the future policy of Russia in this region, he said.

Gurbanly believes the issues discussed during the talks between the Russian Foreign Minister and the President of Azerbaijan, and during other meetings indicate that the relations between the two countries reached a qualitatively new level.

NAP Deputy Executive Secretary reminded that Azerbaijan and Russia held discussions relating to the status of the Caspian, energy issues, and use of the Gabala radar station.

From this point of view discussions held during the visit of Lavrov to Azerbaijan are important, said Gurbanly.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov paid a visit to Azerbaijan on April 3. The foreign ministers of both countries signed a joint statement in connection with the 20th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations.
